de-mystify the process of choreography while providing a valuable lesson in Chinese
history and culture.

H.T. Chen & Dancers' educational program, Heart of the Lion, will focus on themes of transforming stereotypes and embracing one's cultural heritage. Heart of the Lion utilizes live performances of award-winning works by choreographer H.T. Chen, video clips of the Lunar New Year celebrations, lion dancers and a dynamic lecture-demonstration format with audience participation. From the bold colors of street performances to a transcendent search for wisdom, this multi-media dance based educational program takes students on a magical journey of transformation and triumph. It also includes a comprehensive study guide containing class activities and reading lists.
Performances for Heart of the Lion run December 7-9, 13-16; January 10-13, 17-20, 23-26, and 31; February 1-3 at 10:30am. There is also an evening performance on February 10 at 7pm. Performances at the intimate Mulberry St. Theater sell out early and scheduling is on a first-come, first-serve basis. For reservations, please call our office at 212-349-0216.
Special interactive workshops will give students hands-on experience with traditional Chinese dance and calligraphy, or with the choreographic process. In the 90-minute Traditional Arts Workshop students will explore Chinese calligraphy and Ribbon Dance. During the 60-minute Choreography Workshop, students will create their own dances under the guidance of H.T. Chen & Dancers Company members.
